Frederick William Conard

–

Fox Island, WA

Frederick William "Bill" Conard, 73, Fox Island, WA passed at home April 22, 2021 after an unexpected illness.
Bill was born to Frederick and Jane Conard in Columbus, OH and spent most of his youth growing up on the shores of Lake Erie. He attended Port Clinton High School before graduating from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. He went on to receive a master's degree in communication from the University of Northern Colorado. Bill was an Infantry officer, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel after serving 26 years in the US Army.
After retiring, he spent time volunteering as a back-country ranger at Mt. Rainier, snow camping and completing multiple rigorous kayaking trips. He enjoyed his 15 years working for REI. A natural teacher, he was able to share his love of the outdoors with others. He and Jill shared this love - hiking, cross country skiing and kayaking nearly every place the Army assigned them. Emily joined them during her visits.
Bill was an avid sportsman, hunter, outdoorsman, competitive shooter, and NRA instructor. He was a lover of travel, history, and languages. He had a brilliant mind, a sharp sense of humor and enjoyed difficult crossword puzzles. When Bill and Jill moved to Fox Island, he surprised many by creating a picturesque setting for their home and growing acres of lavender. He started Fox Island Lavender and had fun "peddling" his lavender at several local farmers markets. Bill cherished time with his family, relishing the title of Grandpa when Emily and Charlie added William and Greta to the family.
Bill and Jill lived a full life - together sharing military careers, love for travel, and quiet games of cribbage. Their trips to France were particularly special to them, enjoying the history, food, and fine wines. They enjoyed training their springer spaniels to become terrific hunters and loyal companions.
Missing Bill's smile are his wife, Jill (nee Mohror), daughter Emily (Charlie) Penner, Mequon, Wisconsin, and grandchildren William and Greta. He is further survived by Emily's mother, Ann Benedict Miller, Jill's three sisters, Robin, Lori and Kristi, their families, and a close circle of dear friends.
Bill's family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Fisher House Foundation. A private celebration of Bill's life will be planned for a later date.
