Gig Harbor, Washington
John Wright, 81, a long time resident of Gig Harbor, left us peacefully Monday, April 8th, 2013. Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was a lifelong learner, who completed his high school studies early before embarking on a long and distinguished military career. That career led him around the world with assignments in Greenland, Turkey and Japan, where he met his lifelong love who eventually became his wife, Toshie. His interest in learning, along with his aptitude, allowed him to quickly absorb the culture of the countries he toured. He spoke Turkish, Japanese, Spanish and some Vietnamese. For over twenty years, he served his country with strength, courage and honor, defending us in Korea and Viet Nam, for two tours. John was truly a hero, not only to his family, but also his country.
He went on to attend the University of Arizona and ultimately, received his BA in Anthropology and History from Evergreen State College. In 1978, John began a second long and rewarding career with the Washington State Department of Corrections. During his 18 years of service with the department, he served as a counselor, training manager, grievance coordinator, and ultimately supervisor. He retired in 1996.
His retirement years were spent enjoying his family, beautiful home, prized garden and volunteering in the Gig Harbor community at the local food bank. As with everywhere else he served, he was admired, respected and loved.
He will be dearly missed by many, especially his family, including his wife Toshie; sons, Anthony and Aki; daughter in-law, Julie; granddaughter, Victoria; and his two grandsons, Mason and Ethan.
A memorial service will be at 10:30am, Tuesday, April 16th at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor. He will then receive military honors prior to his internment at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
So that He seemed not to relinquish life, but to leave one home for another. -Roman Historian
