Norma Alice Meyer died peacefully at home on January 5 at age 92. She was born May 22, 1929, in Tacoma, to Alice and Norman Wilder who owned and operated the Wilder Berry Farm in Puyallup, as well as Tacoma Beauty Supply. Norma attended Puyallup High School, graduating with honors in academics and athletics while helping manage the farm. She majored in Fashion Design and studied Art under the NW Mystics at University of Washington before marrying her high school sweetheart William R. (Bill) Meyer. They raised their five children on Wollochet Bay, and enjoyed summer and winter skiing, cooking and entertaining with their family and friends. Together they took up sailing: racing and later exploring with their grandchildren the San Juan and Gulf Islands. In their 60+ years of marriage they built a cabin on the Hoh River, sharing their deep Northwest experience on the Olympic Peninsula hunting, fishing, clamming, and hiking with all. In 1987, on a spontaneous trip to Sonora, Mexico they purchased property and spent the next 20 years fulfilling a dream: completing and sharing their Mexican home, filling it with Norma's art from this period: paintings and her contemporary architectural stain glass windows; traveling to San Miguel de Allende and other regions annually to enjoy more local culture, food, and their great love for dancing; meeting friends and collecting folk art from local artisans.
Norma's greatest loves were her husband, her children, and her passion for painting. She is remembered as tirelessly working at her craft and creative interests throughout all periods of her life: painting, fashion design, gardening (especially roses), and creating unique and beautiful homes. Norma attained mastery in oil paint, which was a lifetime study and consistent passion of hers. Norma's life was an expression of love and creativity.
Husband, Bill, sister Naida (Teddy) Watrin, and grandson, Justin Meyer preceded Norma in death. Survivors include daughters Robin Meyer of Friday Harbor, Shelley Sass of Gig Harbor, Tweed Meyer of Wauna, and Shawn McAllister of Quinault; along with adopted son, Steve Meyer; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. A private family celebration is planned.
